Designing together to promote mutual understanding between people with different cultural backgrounds

DESIGNING TOGETHER

According to the 2016 Population By-census (2017), the number of ethnic minorities (EM) in Hong Kong reached a new high.

As reported by the University of Hong Kong in their study of ethnic minories and their opinions of public services (Policy 21 Limited and Centre for Civil Society and Governance, The University of Hong Kong, 2018), the needs of EM are not fully understood by our society.

The purpose of this study was to see how a co-design participatory workshop could promote mutual understanding and social integration among people with different cultural backgrounds.

It is hoped this study will inform designers about the importance of participation and involvement of people with different cultural backgrounds in the design process as for the purposes of mutual understanding and social integration: it is better to design "with" them instead of designing "for" them.
